Kealakaha Bridge Replacement

Kealakaha Bridge Replacement

On May 11, 2010 the new Kealakaha Bridge was dedicated by Mayor Billy Kenoi, Representative Mark Nakashima, DOT Director Brennan Morioka and others.  The new 650 foot bridge crosses the Kealakaha Gulch at over 200 feet below the gulch floor.  The old bridge, constructed in 1935, was notorious for its narrow curvature. Honokaa Elementary Whole School Renovation

Honoka’a Elementary School is undergoing renovations including the removal of asbestos containing building material, replacement of windows, floor covering, whiteboards, electrical items, doors and door frames, finish hardware, termite damaged wood, sinks and cabinets, security screens, re-keying of locks, interior and exterior painting, furniture, and minor repair work. The projected finish date for this project is September 2010.

Concerns with student safety and severe congestion around Waimea Elementary and Middle Schools brought community, school and government leaders together to address traffic safety concerns.  During the summer of 2010 work was completed on a Lindsey Temporary Road to provide an alternative drop-off access route to the backside of Waimea Elementary and Waimea Public Conversion Charter Schools. Kawaihae Bypass

Kawaihae Bypass

The proposed Kawaihae Road Bypass is meant to provide an alternative highway route between Waimea and Kawaihae.  The existing route was constructed in 1934 and suffers from serious design and capacity deficiencies unsuitable for a modern highway.  The new route will run from the vicinity of the Waimea Kohala Airport on Mamlahoa Highway to Akoni

Waiaka Bridge

 The Department of Transportation is currently using $1 million in funds appropriated by the legislature to design a replacement for the current bridge.  The bridge and its approaches, including the Kawaihae Road/Kohala Mountain Road intersection, was constructed in 1932 and no longer meets existing highway standards.  The structure itself  is very narrow, which restricts sight distances and inhibits
